Why your symptoms aren’t just struggles—they’re messages guiding you back into alignment.

I’ve been reflecting deeply on this significant transition that seems to be permeating discussions in various circles these days. It feels as though we have rapidly evolved from a place of silence, where this topic was rarely mentioned, to a point where it has become one of the most prevalent subjects of conversation. Yet, despite the volume of dialogue surrounding it, much of the focus remains on the symptoms we experience—on what our bodies are “doing to us” during this time of change.
But what if we took a moment to shift our perspective inward and redirected our attention to what those symptoms might be revealing to us? What if we explored the deeper messages behind the physical manifestations of this transition?
Perimenopause is often described as a season of awakening for many women, a time when they begin to hear the subtle whispers of their bodies. These whispers can serve as vital signals, indicating that we may be living out of alignment with our true selves. They might suggest that we are pushing ourselves too hard toward burnout, staying in relationships that no longer nourish our spirits, or neglecting aspects of our health and well-being that require our attention. I once encountered a poignant description of this experience: as estrogen levels drop during perimenopause and beyond, it’s akin to a veil being lifted from our eyes. In this newfound clarity, the tolerances we once held begin to fade, and we can see with stark honesty what no longer serves us. This moment invites us to explore and discover a new way of living that honors our evolving selves.
Listening to these gentle whispers before they escalate into louder cries for attention requires a commitment to turning inward. It calls us to engage in the inner work necessary to rediscover what alignment means for us in this very moment—not the alignment we sought at 25, but the one that resonates with us now, in this unique season of our lives. The whispers may manifest as hot flashes, mood swings, or even a pervasive sense of dullness toward life that we cannot quite shake off. Yet, beneath each of these experiences lies a reservoir of wisdom, guiding us to examine what is out of balance in our relationships, our professional lives, or our overall health.
This midlife transition should not be viewed merely as a decline or a passage into “old age.” Instead, it is a profound gift—a precious opportunity to pause and reflect, to assess what is genuinely serving us, and to ask ourselves essential questions: What needs to change in my life? What aspects require healing? What deserves my attention and nurturing in order to flourish?
For me, this stage of life is not about embracing the archetype of the crone, which often carries connotations of decline or passivity. Rather, I envision myself stepping into the archetype of the wild woman—an embodiment of vibrancy, strength, joy, and a zest for life that defies conventional expectations. This is a time to celebrate our fullness, to embrace our power, and to live boldly.
